Should WFP/ UNO apologise with Nepalese Journalists?

In my previous blog post HERE, I have written by mincing no words that there is an inherent ego problem with UN Officials, people working in NGO/INGO and European Union Mission in Nepal. You must read my previous posts on "Rotten rice distributed by WFP and the backing of it by European Union Representatives in Nepal" by clicking the LINK HERE

Now, let me take this debate ahead:

It is no secret that the journalists are at risk worldwide. Most of the time, they get threatened by government agencies and many times, by militants, insurgents, rebels, and terrorists depending on the nature of an agitating groups. But, In Nepal, it has been threatened by non other than United Nations (UN) Organization. It has been made clear by the recent Press Conference of John Ging, Director of Coordination and Response Division, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) where he dismissed the media reports of WFP distributing rotten, decayed and substandard rice in earthquake affected areas of Nepal. While dismissing such reports, he used a very derogatory term to call Nepalese Media "non-sense" and even threatened that WFP may shift the assistance to Yemen or Syria if such reports are continued.

So, what does that mean? That clearly means UNO or WFP does not want any negative publicity even if they have made wrongs or done some mistakes. For example, the press conference of John Ging has made it very clear that he wants the matter to be put under carpet and he threatens indirectly to the journalists that if they carry out the truth based on news and facts, WFP may discontinue the distribution of rice in areas affected by earthquake. Such threat of WFP has found immediate backing from European Union Mission Head in Nepal in social Media. She even went ahead to mock Nepali Nationalism and used very vilifying and virulent words in her social media interactions. Her words were clear that Nepalese may have pride but they can not eat that. What they can eat then? Of Course the rotten and decayed Rice distributed by WFP in earthquake affected areas of Nepal.

It shows how international organizations like UNO or European Union (EU) are treating poor Nepalese after the massive earthquake that struck Nepal.

The detailed report of UN Official calling Nepali Media Non-sense and using threat to shift aid from Nepal can be read here as reported by The Himalayan Times.

International News Organization from Australia has also reported on the News Here. The News Portal www.southasia.com.au has reported that the UN Official warned the Nepali Journalists with a headline "Stop accusing or your food will go to Iraq and Syria, top UN official warns Nepal".

In relation to such threats and use of unacceptable word by WFP/UN Official warning Journalists not to report on decayed and rotten rice distributed by WFP, www.myrepulica.com has written an editorial slamming such unacceptable behavior and words of UN Official. The Editorial can be read HERE

Against such vilifying, derogatory and threatening comments, Nepalese Journalists' Association (Federation of Nepalese Journalists - FNJ) and National Human Rights Commission of Nepal (NHRC) have raised a strong objection.

In the news, it has been reported that Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has condemned the remarks by senior United Nations (UN) official on reports in Nepali media over distribution of sub-standard food to the earthquake victims by the World Food Organization. The FNJ has said that the said the remarks of visiting UN official John Ging, who termed reports in the Nepali media (on distribution of decayed and rotten rice distributed by WFP)  'nonsense', not only breaches diplomatic decorum, but also goes against right to freedom of expression and freedom of the press. The FNJ has also termed his remarks a direct interference in Nepal's nationality and sovereignty.

It must be noted that the separate probes of parliamentary panel and National Human Rights Commission found that the food distributed by WFP in Gorkha and Kavrepalanchowk districts were sub-standard as the rice was decayed, rotten and unfit for human consumption, the WFP has been consistently maintaining that all the food it distributed were of good quality and in this relation, the UN Official has used the undiplomatic and uncivilized word while addressing Media in Nepal.

Similarly, it has been reported that NHRC finds Ging's comments undiplomatic. (Ging had made comments slamming Nepali Media as Nepali Media had acted like a watchdog when WFP was distributing rotten, decayed and substandard rice to earthquake victims in Gorkha and other parts of Nepal in the garb of relief to victims of earthquakes.)

Commissioners at National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the organization that recommended the government to take necessary action against the WFP, discussed the comments of the UN official on Thursday as per the report.

The news further said "As we have already recommended the government to take action against the organization (WFP for distributing rotten, decayed and sub-standard rice), we didn't issue any official statement. However, we discussed the issue seriously. In our discussion, we concluded that Ging's comments were not in keeping with diplomatic decorum," said Mohana Ansari, spokesperson for the commission.

So, what you think, should WFP apologize to the People of Nepal for distributing rotten, decayed and substandard rice? Should WFP and UNO apologize with Nepali Journalists for using undiplomatic, uncivilized, virulent comments by its employees and mission in Nepal? Do Comment.
